When I first started writing my books, I was afraid to let people read my works. Sometimes, we as writers, get very sensitive, overpossessive and restricted. That happens because we lack the confidence in the words and assistance of others. Some people, especially family members that are not creative, tend to be overly critical of our works. This can put a strain on the writing process. Remember, as skilled as we are, writing is still an emotional act. You have to sometimes get opinions from others that are in the same field as you.
Many writers are intimidated by my ability to promote myself. I only promote myself because it took me many years to believe that writing can be a career. Although I have been writing for over 42 years, it has only been the last four that I have focused solely on it as a business. Sure I wrote songs for recording artists, produced plays and wrote PSAs, but never have I put all my effort into myself.
Do not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. Speak to people that own businesses that cater to writers. You do not always have to go to a bookstore. I found this out when trying to get my titles in small and large bookstores. If you are not selling tens of thousands of books, or if your books are only print on demand books, many of the proprietors do not consider even hosting a book signing for you. Network with others that have businesses.
Sooner or later, you will have to get a literary agent. Be very wary of those that claim they can make you a New York Times Best Selling author. Although reaching out to literary agents helps you get to the main publishers, you can easily get to these so called MAJORS by networking with individuals that do business with the publishers.
I have had book promotions in places that the average writer did not consider promoting in. No matter where you are, people have to read. So if you are in a local restaurant, mom and pop store, beauty salon or barber shop, even the post office, get the word out. Meet people, network with writers. Just by promoting myself, I have met other writers that want to network with me. If I had not been in the right place at the right timight/e, I would be like many writers just sitting around with boxes of books and no one to sell them to.
